Pairing with Colleagues

We are pleased to announce a new "Pairing with Colleagues" program being launched at this year's EACH conference in Oslo.  This program is a renamed version of the “Meet the Professors” program initiated at the ICCH meeting last year in Charleston.  The purpose of the program is to provide a formal way for junior faculty/colleagues to network with more experienced senior faculty at the meeting.  These "Pairing with Colleagues" sessions will allow junior scholars to have an opportunity for dedicated time to discuss their teaching and research issues with more experienced persons in the field. These sessions will give senior colleagues the opportunity to share their experience and expertise with more junior colleagues. We invite all attendees to sign-up to participate in this program either as "junior mentees" or "senior mentors" (this program is not to be confused with the AACH or EACH intensive mentoring program).  This program has been developed by a subcommittee of tEACH, the Teaching Committee of EACH.

The time commitment will be as little or as much as you like. After identifying your teaching and/or research interests related to communication in healthcare on the web-based survey that will only take a few minutes to complete (link below), we will match you with a colleague whose interests are closest to yours as best as we can.  Each "pairing with colleagues" pair will be informed of whom they are paired with and provided with contact information and a variety of suggested meeting times and places during the EACH conference.    The minimal time commitment includes communicating with your matched colleague and choosing a time that you will meet for 1 hour during the EACH meeting.  If after meeting you choose to spend more time together or continue corresponding, that is your choice.

Instructions for participating as either a junior or senior colleague are provided below.  Please note that there are two different surveys, one if you are junior and one if you are senior. Please only complete the one most appropriate to how you would like to participate in the program.

Junior colleague/mentee commitment

Contact your senior colleague to identify a meeting time.  Come to the meeting with questions about teaching, research and career development in communication in healthcare that you would like to discuss.

Junior colleagues please respond to the survey by clicking here by July 11, 2008. The link will open in a new window.

Senior colleague/mentor commitment

Your paired junior colleague will contact you.  Please respond to him or her about an appropriate meeting time during the conference.  Come to the meeting willing to share your experience and information about teaching, research and resources with your junior colleague.  Also, offer suggestions about other people who may be of help to your junior colleague, and, if they are at the meeting and you feel it is appropriate to do so, help to make introductions.

Please respond to this survey by clicking here by July 11, 2008. The link will open in a new window.

If you have any questions about the program feel free to contact Marcy Rosenbaum, "Pairing with Colleagues" program chair. If you have any problems with opening or completing the survey, please contact stephanie-burnett@uiowa.edu.

Below are some comments about the benefits of the program from junior and senior participants last year in Charleston:

Many of the same interests; a thoughtful and thought-provoking opportunity for both of us

The senior colleague was very encouraging, validating my skills and experiences and their applicability to future work. The senior colleague also offered concrete suggestions and introduced me to some people at the conference

Getting to know someone who shares many interests with me.  Feeling inspired and energized by the other's energy.
Bravo for this initiative, from the junior perspective it was a very enriching experience

I learned something about the perspective of a younger colleague at a different location; I had an opportunity to share my own experiences.

What a wonderful way to meet new/newer conference participants. Thank you
